Types of Coffee Beans

Behind every cup of coffee we enjoy, there are carefully graded beans. They are graded based on size, color and shape.

The AA grade is granted to coffee beans that fulfill the criteria above, with the exception that they are not allowed to have more than 3 defects (quakers). Most often, these are Kenya AA beans.

Arabica

Arabica coffee beans are also known as Coffea Arabicica and are the most sought-after coffee in the world. All other arabica cultivars were developed from these two varieties, either through natural mutations, or deliberate crossbreeding. The flavor of an arabica variety is determined by the conditions under which it is planted, as well as the way it is treated and roasted. For instance, the kind of shade a plant receives in its altitude, its elevation and soil composition could all play a influence on the final outcome.

Robusta

Robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) are the second most popular type of coffee. They are commonly used in instant coffees. They also contain twice the amount of caffeine as Arabica Coffee Beans. Liberica

Liberica coffee beans are rare and are rarely used in the world. They're less than 2 percent of the total consumption of coffee beans and are often overlooked since they don't contain the same amount of caffeine. These beans have a distinct taste that a majority of coffee drinkers find irresistible.

Despite their rarity, Liberica coffee beans are still fairly popular in parts of Asia. They are most popular in Malaysia and Indonesia, which have large Muslim population. The history of Liberica coffee dates back to the 1890s, when a global epidemic of coffee leaf rust destroyed the majority of the world's arabica crop. This incident prompted coffee farmers to look for a resilient plant that would thrive in tropical climates. They soon discovered Liberica.

Liberica plants have a high tolerance to pests and diseases which makes them a perfect replacement for the ravaged arabica crop. Liberica can also thrive in lower elevations and higher temperatures that allow it to thrive in the climate of Southeast Asia. Excelsa

Although it's not common for speciality coffee beans enthusiasts to find excelsa beans, they are now gaining recognition for their distinctive flavor. But despite this resemblance to the family it is important to remember that excelsa is technically not a separate species.
