French-door fridges combine design and function. They have stylish double doors that reveal the large fridge on top, and a freezer drawer beneath. Special features like door-to-door dispensers, higher-end ice machines and flex drawers that can be customized make them stand out from the rest.

We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. They weighed storage capacity and layout, energy efficiency, and other features.

GE Profile Counter countertop depth refrigerator french door French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that GE's Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This fridge has them all, from the Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator is a premium, I expect better.

Other than that, this fridge is a great choice. It has a large freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it holds a good amount of frozen foods as compared to similar models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment has 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a fridge with a French door at this price. It has a decent-sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can alter the shelving in both compartments to create a customized storage layout for the items you need to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is stylish, too. The LED lighting is an attractive accent. The in-door storage bins come with a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers have temperature controls so you can set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, but I found their plastic textured coatings to be a little rough on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator in this price range. This includes Wi-Fi as well as app support, and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your fridge from anywhere in world, and has many options for customizing. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when the refrigerator or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It is nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill, an option found in a few GE refrigerators that allows users to select how many cups they want to pour out. The fridge displays a countdown to show you how much water remains, but it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth french door refrigerator with largest freezer Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is an impressive product. It's designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher longer and dual compressors to ensure maximum food preservation. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and produces an ice pyramid with only a little water. This refrigerator is a great choice for single household or kitchenettes looking for an integrated look and top of the line food preservation.

This refrigerator was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test due to a variety of reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and never fluctuating more than a fraction a degree--this is key in preventing freezing burn. The refrigerator section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the initial temperature set within a matter of hours, and maintained that temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch is a household name known for its top-quality appliances. Therefore, it's no surprise that Bosch's counter depth fridge Bosch counter depth fridge can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's platform Home Connect. The app allows you to control and monitor your refrigerator remotely on your tablet or smartphone. The fridge is expensive however, it offers excellent features and functions at a fair price.

It's important to understand the limitations of the fridge. It has a narrow shelf space, so you may require some creativity when it comes to storing large items. The shelves are also not spillproof and can easily be damaged or stained by sharp items. It's simple to remove the trays in the fridge however, you must clean them frequently to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth fridge is a great choice for those who require a lot of space in a small frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with an ordinary French door design, with two rows of shelving with spill-capture and a set of crisper drawers. The top right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more space. There's also a full-width storage drawer for products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it easy to move the frozen ice whenever you need it. The freezer is designed with thoughtful elements, as well, such as sliding drawers that help better organize the position of items. It also comes with a large bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items as well as a separate storage bin for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's an easy way to monitor your refrigerator and manage it, particularly when you're away from home.

Although the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't improve the overall performance of the refrigerator. The fridge took a bit longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we test. This could be due to its bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. They have sunken handles at the front, which allows shorter people to easily pull them open from the bottom, however they're difficult for taller people to guide shut without slamming them. It would have been much better if they had front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with an efficient layout. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model and it cools evenly and has a good layout. It's also less expensive than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which can make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire french door fridge with drawer (qooh.me's website) door refrigerator is a great choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a basic design that isn't as visually striking as other models but it does have enough features that make it a great choice. Its most notable feature is the adjustable temperature drawer, which helps keep foods like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge ice maker as well as a water dispenser.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. This drawer allows you to use the majority of the refrigerator's cooling power to this area so that you can store foods which need extra attention. You can alter this feature by using an adjustable slider that is located just outside of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray much from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within a degree of 36. This is a great performance, but it doesn't quite make it into the top ten in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat to get more accurate readings on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge proof" finish. It is capable of removing streaks and fingerprints even when compared to the glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
