Replacement Handles For Windows

Double-glazed windows are a popular feature. Over time, they may become rusted or worn out.

To replace a UPVC window handle you need to know the length of the spindle of the handle you are replacing and its fixings. The best method to do this is by looking at the base of the handle you have previously replaced.

Handle

Over time uPVC window locks and handles can be damaged by wear and tear or accidental or deliberate damage. This can result in the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or it isn't locked in any way. If this happens it may be tempting to replace the entire window unit, however this isn't always necessary. Most of the time, it's the situation that a new handle or lock will suffice.

The most commonly used type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. This handle has a spindle that protrudes from the handle. It fits into a gearbox, which controls the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. Squeaky hinges may be an indication that the hinges must be replaced. This is usually due to metal hitting metal. If the noise persists, a small amount of lubricant will aid.

Plumb windows help avoid optional binding, this means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, ensuring that it opens and closes properly. If a window is not plumb could begin to close and open with difficulty or get warped over time, creating problems for the seal and appearance of the window.

You can purchase replacement hinges for windows made of upvc in imperial and metric sizes. The sizes in metric are slightly more precise, but this isn't really noticeable when they are installed. It's simple to replace the window crank with minimum effort. But, it's essential to buy the correct size replacement. You can tell if the replacement has the exact same height of step as the original one by measuring the distance from the crank arm guide bushing to the notch on the track at the bottom of the frame. You can also determine the length of the spindle that is on your existing handle to determine the size you will need for a replacement.

The kind of window handle that you have will determine what kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle at the back which is connected to the frame of the window and is the motor that drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles are fitted with pegs which are fixed into their position by three or four screws that are inserted into the sash and frame.

Once you've identified the right replacement, it's simple to fit. Remove any screws that attach to the trim from the casement cover and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Remove any rusted trim screws and then compare the new operating lever to the old to ensure they match. Then, screw the new lever to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and then place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
