Light roast arabica coffee beans direct from the source coffee beans are the (relatively) new kid on the block. The art of creating delicious light roasts is a delicate balance of roasting artisanally and multi-origin blending.

nescafe-brasile-coffee-beans-100-arabicaThe process of roasting burns off some of the natural sugars found in the coffee bean, it also produces new sugars. This is why light roasts are sweeter than dark roasts.

Light Roast

A light roast is a coffee that has been lightly roasted to preserve the natural flavor of beans. The name suggests that these types of coffees tend to be lighter in body than dark roasts and can be enjoyed with a variety methods of brewing, including drip, french press, pour over and espresso. Light roasts tend to have more vibrant and fruity flavors and may highlight the qualities of a coffee's origin more than darker roasts.

This is especially true when working with single-estate or micro-lot coffees. This level of roast can help bring out delicate and nuanced flavors which are often lost in roasting in dark. No matter what you prefer the roast levels all produce distinctive and delicious coffees.

Light roasts are also well-known for their refreshing acidity and mellow body. This is why these coffees provide energy and a fresh boost without the heavy feeling that is often associated with dark roasts. These coffees are great for those who want to start the day with a little more energy and a fresh taste.

There is some truth to the notion that lighter roasts contain more caffeine than a darker roast. However, this is a bit misleading as it depends on the method you use to weigh your coffee. If you weigh your coffee then a scoop of light roast will contain more caffeine than an ounce of a darker roast (because it's heavier). If you measure by volume, both will have about the same amount.

The process of roasting is the primary ingredient in an excellent light roast. This is why it's important to work with a roaster you trust, since poorly executed light roasts may have a strong burnt, or bitter taste that can overwhelm the other desirable qualities of the coffee. We are thrilled to work with small, family-owned roasters who are committed to high-quality coffee.

Our Extra Mile Kenyan is a perfect example of a well-crafted light roast. It has a smooth mouthfeel and sweet notes of baker's chocolate and stonefruit. It is also sourced from an ethical and sustainable farm that works to fully regenerative agriculture practices.

Medium Roast

Often described as the Goldilocks roast medium roast is the "just right" coffee that falls between light and dark roast. It has the traditional, familiar diner-style notes of dark roast but with a greater balance and subtlety, medium roasts offer a wide range of exciting flavors and aromas.

Medium roast arabica coffee beans are heated for a lesser amount of time and at lower temperatures than dark roasts. The beans reach around 385 degrees and begin to pop (this is known as the first crack). Beans that have been roasted to this level will be light brown in color and won't have any oil on their surface.

This level of roasting preserves the distinctive aroma and flavor notes of the original coffee bean. This includes fruity and floral aromas and flavors indigenous to the region of origin. Lightly roasted coffee beans possess more acidity and a brighter color, as well as a mellower body.

A medium roast could be flavored with caramel, chocolate and hints of spice, depending on the beans that are used. It is important to remember that these flavors are less prominent than in a light roast since the beans have been roast for a longer period of time.

Apart from the boldness and richness of dark roasted coffee, medium-dark flavored coffee can be bittersweet with a strong flavor that can make it unpalatable for some palates. Dark roasted coffee is distinguished by its rich oily appearance, and flavors of bittersweet chocolate, dark caramel and smoke.

If you're looking for a balanced, smooth cup of coffee that is lighter than dark roast, but not as delicate as light roast medium roast, then our medium roast arabica beans is the perfect option. Our Happy Place blend is created with single-origin coffee beans from high-elevation farms that are Rainforest Alliance Certified and practice completely regenerative farming. It has flavors of blackberry, guava and cocoa with a soft end.

All varieties of coffee have the same amount of caffeine regardless of roasting level. The amount of caffeine found in coffee beans varies based on their natural levels, as well as the amount of oxygen the beans absorb when they are roast.

Dark Roast

A dark roast is a form of coffee that has been roasted for longer than light roasted beans. This allows the coffee to develop a more complex flavor profile. This results in a coffee that has an intense, strong flavor, and less acidity as compared to a light-roasted coffee. This type of coffee is ideal for those who are looking for a strong cup of coffee to start their day.

Dark roasted coffee is distinguished by its brown color and oily top, that give it a smoky and classic diner-style. This coffee is characterized by its roasting process. It is crucial to select a high-quality coffee that has been properly roasted to get the full flavor.

It is essential to roast a dark-roasted coffee until the beans start to crack. This indicates that the beans have been correctly roasted and are ready to be prepared to be brewed. Dark-roasted coffee should have a soft mouthfeel and a balance between bitter and sweet flavors.

To find the finest dark roasted coffee, you should focus on premium arabica coffee beans blend beans that are roast at the perfect temperature. This allows the distinctive and exotic qualities of the beans to shine without being masked by an over-roasted flavor.

To find the most delicious dark-roasted coffee, it's important to consider the origins of the beans, as well as the location where they were grown. For example, some regions have a distinct sweetness that is more suitable for dark roasting Some regions provide a rich and complex flavor that can stand up to the intensity of a roast that is dark.

When you are choosing a roast that is dark be sure to keep in mind that the higher the roast level, the more caffeine will be in your coffee. This is because the beans that are roasted are exposed to a greater amount of heat which causes more of the caffeine to be released. In addition the darker the roast more prominent the bitterness will be.

Washed freshly ground arabica coffee beans

Washed coffee beans are the product of a process referred to as "wet processing". After picking the cherries, they are pulverized in tanks, and then fermented to break down the sticky mucilage which covers them. The beans are then dried and then washed to remove any remaining pectin. This is a very popular method for specialty roasters and is an excellent choice for those looking for clean, crisp acidic flavors with medium amounts of sweetness and body.

Based on the duration of fermentation and the amount mucilage remains on the seeds, different flavor compounds are created. They may have floral, earthy, or even the nutty note. This lets washed-coffees express a great deal of terroir as well as distinctiveness of the varietal. Natural processed coffees can develop distinctive flavors due to the fruity pulp surrounding the bean.

After the mucilage has been removed after which the beans can be dried by soaking them in large tanks of hot water (as with the washed method), or by spreading them on patios, raised beds or terraces and rotating them frequently. This process is continued until the seeds have a moisture content of between 10-12 percent.

The final stage is roasting. As the roasting happens, the temperature inside the bean will increase and a cracking sound is heard. This is the moment the moment when vapors begin to penetrate the outer wall of the bean. This is known as the first crack.

Once this occurs when this happens, the beans are now ready to be enjoyed. Light roasts taste fresh and fruity because they have not been roasted long enough for the oils to develop. Medium roasts will be more bready, with more of a richer and deeper flavor because they have been roasted longer. Roasts that are darker can be extremely chocolaty or even smoky, depending on how dark they've been roast.

All of this creates a wide range of tastes and scents It is your choice to choose the one that best fits your preferences! We suggest you try a variety of our single-origin light, medium and dark roasts to discover what the unique flavors of each can provide you.
