David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
