Before Toto was formed, members of the band performed sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate, and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session drummer Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs album from 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 as a result of the collaboration.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for lacking hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Frederiksen quit the group and the band held auditions for a new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the 1986 album Fahrenheit.
Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to mark its 20th anniversary. The band dug through old recordings and tapes to create the special record. The album was well-loved by fans and Toto began an extensive tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
Shem Von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as drummer on the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In the year 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included tour recordings and also an interview with the group.
