How Does Machine Espresso Work?

The machine espresso makes use of precision pressure, and a filtering technology that is amazing to create the coffee and espresso machine you enjoy. How exactly does it work?

To make espresso home machine, hot water is forced under high pressure through finely ground coffee. The process is similar to making drip coffee however the main difference lies in the pressure.

The Head of the Group

The group head is the portafilter is inserted when you are making espresso. It is responsible for dispersing water into the portafilter, and controlling the pressure that results from the extraction. There are a variety of types of group heads each with its distinct advantages and disadvantages. Some focus on temperature stability, others on pre-infusion capabilities, and still others are designed to control the lever. Some are a combination, such as the E61. This is a popular choice among baristas since it provides multiple benefits in one package.

As you can see in the image above the group head is made up of numerous notches that you can place your portafilter and then twist it by hand to secure it. A rubber gasket is located inside the notches to help create a seal as you insert your portafilter. The notches on the head permit a precise location of the portafilter which is vital to ensure an even extraction.

The group head not only allows you to put in your portafilter easily but also maintains the temperature at a constant level. This is accomplished by cycling hot water around the portafilter and through the brew basin, ensuring that the temperature is constant for extraction. This is important, as even a small difference in temperature can be the difference between a good and excellent Espresso Maker barista.

The Pump

In contrast to manual piston machines which rely on a lever to pressurize water, rotary espresso machines rely on motorized pumps to supply the nine atmospheric bars of pressure needed for espresso extraction. The pressure is created by removing tap water from a reservoir, and pumping it through a heat exchanger before it is shot through the ground coffee in the group head.

Pumps tend to be cheaper and last longer than piston-driven machines. However, both types of machines can degrade because of frequent use and poor cleaning. Pumps are also more complex mechanically, and can add to the cost of even the simplest models.

Some espresso machines can eliminate the pump completely and instead make use of steam pressure to make espresso. The downside is that the boiler that produces steam also increases the temperature of water until it reaches boiling, which can lead to excessive extraction. In addition these machines typically have to rebuild their pressure between cups, which takes time and energy.

Many espresso machines use either a vibration or rotary pump. A vibration model uses the vibrating disk to create pressure, whereas the rotating model pushes hot water through the ground at a fast speed. Both types of machine can make excellent espresso, but Rotary machines are quieter and more durable than vibration pumps.

The Boiler

The boiler is the component that heats the water to the ideal temperature to extract. The steam that is produced reaches the portafilter which holds the ground espresso and is then pumped down into the cup. During this process the steam is able to create enough pressure to push the grounds of coffee through. This results in a layer crema on top. This is a hallmark of a good espresso.

There are three kinds of espresso makers. They differ in the kind of pump they use and the degree of heat that the espresso is. There are a variety of ways to control the amount of brew, as well as the size of cup that can be made by the machine.

The first espresso machines were steam-types. They utilized one boiler to make both steam and brew however, the pressure they could generate was low - only two bars of atmospheric pressure, at most. This led to the coffee tasting bitter and burnt. This is the reason Milanese makers Luigi Bezzerra and Desiderio Pavoni developed the modern espresso machine.

The most popular espresso maker is a semi-automatic device with an electric pump. When people think of espresso machines, they envision these machines. Semi-automatic machines require you to grind and tamp the beans on your own, but the pump regulates the water flow and pressure. This is a fantastic solution that combines human control with mechanised reliability.

The Filter

Typically, espresso machines use filters to separate the grounds of coffee as they move through the hot water. The filter is also a crucial component of the temperature control system as it prevents the machine from overheating.

It also improves flavor as a filter lets you enjoy a longer bloom time. This lets the beans let their nuances out, and improves extraction.

It is important to keep in mind that even the most efficient filter can result in a bad cup of coffee. The quality of the beans and the extraction process are still very important.

This is where the magic happens, it's the thing that makes an espresso really taste good. The grouphead, often referred to as the brew head, is where the portafilter (the thing you put the coffee grounds into) sits when you're making barista espresso machine.

In the steam-driven espresso machine hot water is heated in an airtight container to create steam. Steam then pushes the hot water through the grounds under high pressure. These machines are less expensive and easier for the owner to maintain than pumps-driven models. However, they are not as efficient in their ability to produce the ideal conditions for brewing since they operate at 1-1.5 bars of pressure, while the perfect shot requires 9-10 bar.

de-longhi-dedica-style-traditional-pump-In recent years, espresso machines driven by a compressed air compressor have become increasingly popular. They utilize an air compressor to push hot water through the grounds and are more portable than electric steam-driven machines.
