The DCT for instance, does not take into account individual and cultural differences. Furthermore it is also the case that the DCT can be biased and could lead to overgeneralizations. It should be carefully analyzed before being used for research or evaluation.

Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a valuable tool to study the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. Its ability to use two or more stages to manipulate the social variables that are related to politeness can be a strength. This characteristic can be utilized to study the effect of prosody in various cultural contexts.

In the field linguistics, DCT is one of the most effective tools for analyzing communication behaviors of learners. It can be used to study a variety of issues such as the manner of speaking, turn taking and lexical selection. It can also be used to determine the phonological difficulty of learners their speech.

Recent research utilized a DCT as an instrument to test the ability to resist of EFL students. The participants were given an array of scenarios and asked to select an appropriate response from the options provided. The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not adhere to the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. Furthermore, they were clearly aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their decision to learner-internal factors such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors like relational advantages. They described, for example, how their relationships with their professors allowed them to function more easily in terms of the linguistic and social standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed.
