How to Replace an audi a4 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test as there are different pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find particularly when they're an Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an option.
