How Much Does an Ignition Key Replacement Cost?

The loss of your car keys can be a major hassle. Getting a replacement usually involves an appointment at an auto dealership or a locksmith.

Costs vary based on kind of key. Some types of car keys are cheaper to replace than others. There are four types of ignition keys: mechanical keys, remote keyfobs, transponder and switchblade.

Mechanical Key

There's a good chance that you own a traditional mechanical key if the car was manufactured before the '90s. These keys are made of metal with a head which is inserted into the ignition, then turned to start the vehicle. They are easy to copy and do not contain any electronic components. If you already have a conventional, non-electronic lock an auto locksmith could easily cut it and program it at the price of less than $50.

In the 1990s, key fobs became popular. They are designed to operate from a distance using a remote control instead of having to insert the key into the ignition. They are much simpler to duplicate and do not require any special tools to do so although they will cost more than traditional keys.

Transponder keys, which were introduced in 1995, come with microchips that communicate with the vehicle immobilizer to ensure that only the right key is used to start the motor. Transponder keys are harder to duplicate and will generally cost more to cut and programmed.

If you are having trouble starting your car, it could be due to a defective switch. This part will cost more than a standard key, but it is worth the investment to ensure that your car is secure.

If your repair ignition lock cylinder lock cylinder gets stuck or cannot be placed in by gently turning the key. This could help release the lock wafers that might have been damaged due to frequent usage. This method is not always efficient and may result in further damage.

Remote Key

You'll pay less for a replacement key if your car has a traditional key. They are made of metal shaft that is inserted into the vehicle's ignition and then turned to turn it on to start it. These keys are available at places like AutoZone and locksmiths, and do not require any special programming to work with your vehicle.

If you're driving a newer vehicle, your key may include a transponder chip within it to help prevent theft. The chips transmit a signal from the key to a receiver in the ignition to ensure that only a genuine key is in use and is able to start the engine. The more sophisticated versions of these keys are referred to as rolling keys, that send an entirely different signal each time they're used. This ensures that even if someone does manage to steal the key and open your car, it won't in a position to start.

Key fobs are essentially an electronic remote control that lets you to lock or unlock your vehicle, as to set off the alarm or open the trunk, without having to physically insert it into the ignition. These are more common on cars built after the 1990s. They're a great method to secure your car from theft and provide you more convenience.

If you have keys that need replacement you should be prepared to spend more because they require extra programming. Most dealers charge a fee to program the new key fob, but you can save some money by following your owner's guide to reprogram the key yourself. The key fob will cost you between $50 and $100.

Switchblade Key

The switchblade key sounds as if it's an armed weapon with blades for self-defense in parking lots however it's really an innovative car key that folds up into the fob when not being used. This type of key can be bought at a locksmith, auto dealer or even on the internet, but the cost will be higher than traditional keys.

Key fobs regulate the functions of your key and transmit signals when they are within reach. The computer or immobilizer inside the car will recognize the signal, and allow the engine to start. Transponder chips are integrated into modern vehicles since 1995 and provide a unique, only-your-car read-code. Professional locksmiths can modify your key and chip in the event that they are damaged or lost.

Traditional keys can still be substituted with cheap, simple fobs that do not have an integrated chip. They are typically sold at auto parts stores or other retail outlets between $25 and $100. The cost of a replacement key fob with an integrated chip can run up to $500 or more, depending on the manufacturer and the features that are included.

A key fob with a switchblade can cost from $200 to $300, including the price of a new battery and programming. If the key fob isn't damaged it is possible to replace the blade or shank. Additionally to that, certain kinds of keys can include VATS or PASS-Key circuit. These chips are equipped with resistors to stop misuse by sending various codes to the car's computer and immobilizers when inserted into the ignition cylinder. This deters thieves from attempting to force your ignition cylinder and makes it more difficult for them to copy the key.

Transponder Key

If your car was built in the last two decades, it's likely it is equipped with a transponder. These keys transmit a code when they are inserted into the repair ignition lock cylinder. This helps prevent vehicle theft. The code is verified by the computer in your car, and the engine is started if the code matches. If you don't have a transponder key that works it will be impossible to start your car.

Be aware that a car dealership will charge a higher price if you want to get a new transponder. They are often the only people in town that can create the exact type of key your vehicle requires. A locksmith can program and cut your new key at a fraction of the price.

Transponder keys are a security measure that was introduced when car thieves began using a technique called hot-wiring to steal vehicles in the 80s. To combat this, General Motors started incorporating the small RFID chip inside their key fobs that can communicate with your car to start it. This technology helps prevent car theft as it renders hot-wiring ineffective.

If you have transponder keys you might notice that the grooves on the metal portion of your key are beginning to wear down. This is because the grooves shift tiny pins within the lock into a position that allows your car to start up. You'll also be able to see that the key symbol on your car's dashboard doesn't appear when you insert the key into the ignition cylinder lock repair. If you are having these issues you should call an auto locksmith to replace your keys.

Smart Key Key

Smart keys bring technology to the next level. The key, instead of using an ordinary key, is equipped with a computer that communicates with your vehicle, allowing you to perform basic tasks such as unlocking the doors and trunk, as well as opening the car with the push a button. These keys are more expensive than traditional keys or transponder ones due the integrated technology.

To work the smart keys, they are equipped with the LF (low frequency) transmitting antennas inside and outside the vehicle. They activate when you turn the trunk or door. The LF signal travels through the body and door to the interior electronics which recognize the smart key as valid. Once it is recognized, the car disables its immobilizer and starts the engine.

Smart keys can be a security risk. If you're not far from your vehicle, someone could take the low-frequency signal and begin your vehicle by simply placing it in an ignition slot, according to How Stuff Works Electronics. Some manufacturers limit the transmission range to 10 cm to limit the risk.

The model year and type of vehicle you drive also influence the cost of replacing a key. In general older cars tend to have lower key replacements than those with more modern features. Certain models may require a keyless system that is integrated with the fob to allow features such as remote locking and trunk access. Contact Pop-A-Lock to receive an estimate before you go to the dealer if you're concerned about the price of a replacement cost. Our locksmiths can provide a replacement at a lower price and can often provide superior service than the dealership.Mazda-3D-Black.png
