Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out.
