Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
