How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor Audi Car Key Holder is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

The good news is they are very cheap and easy to find, especially when you're looking at a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an option.

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi a3 keys, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning.
