Chimineas of clay can be fired in kilns which remove organic materials from the clay and seals the pores to avoid cracking. They can be used outdoors all year long however, they should not be exposed to the elements for too long.

Origins

The traditional terra-cotta stoves were designed to serve as both radiant heaters and ovens, helping tribesmen through the cold desert nights of their home. Their distinctive design was inspired by their utilitarian principles that stressed practicality and communal living.

These stoves were initially constructed of natural terra-cotta clay which was dried and then wood-fired in kilns. Chimineas made from clay have a more rustic appearance and were not glazed to protect the surface. Modern manufacturers now produce chimineas using metals like brass, cast iron and aluminum. These materials provide enhanced durability and weather resistance, addressing one of the main limitations of the clay design.

The unique design of the chiminea was created by a pot-bellied base which rises to form an elongated fireplace. This form is a perfect way to contain fire while also directing smoke upwards, which reduces air inhalation and maximizes heat retention.
