Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records.
