How to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly when they're a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your car. It is a crucial part of the new audi key's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the Car key Replacement audi's crankshaft is turning.
