How to Replace an audi car keys replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.
The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very affordable and easily accessible, especially if you're looking at an Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi tt key Case because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine is turning.
