How to Replace an audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.
A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires audi key fob replacement cost. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. This is the same across the audi A3 spare key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
