How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated Near By a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.
